Barcelona Airport to City Centre: Every Option Compared (2026)

Aerobús, R2 Nord train, metro L9, bus 46, taxi or a private driver: current prices, journey times and which option suits your trip.

Last updated: 10 October 2026. Fares and timetables checked against the operators listed at the end of this guide.

Getting from Barcelona airport to city centre takes anywhere from 20 minutes to just over an hour, and costs anything from the price of a bus ticket to around €45 for a taxi. The right choice depends on three things: which terminal you land at, where your hotel is, and how much luggage (and how many people) you are bringing. This guide compares every realistic option with current prices, journey times and the small details that trip people up on arrival.

Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) sits about 15 km southwest of the city, between the sea and the Llobregat delta. It has two terminals, T1 and T2, roughly 4 km apart. Most long-haul and full-service airlines use T1; many low-cost carriers, including easyJet and Ryanair, use T2. That single fact changes which public transport options are convenient for you, so check your boarding pass before reading further.

The quick answer

Here is every way to get from Barcelona airport to city centre at a glance:

  • Aerobús – the easiest public option from both terminals: about 35 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya, roughly €7.45 one way.
  • R2 Nord train – the cheapest fast option if you land at T2: about 20 minutes to Sants, around €5, or one trip on a T-casual card.
  • Metro L9 Sud – useful if your hotel is near a metro line, but slow: around 50 minutes with a change, €5.90 airport ticket.
  • Bus 46 – the budget choice to Plaça d’Espanya, standard city fare, 35–45 minutes.
  • Taxi – door to door, metered, usually €35–45 to central districts.
  • Pre-booked private driver – a driver waiting in arrivals at a fixed price per vehicle; best for families, groups and late arrivals.

Before you leave the terminal: T1 or T2?

At T1, the arrivals hall is on the ground floor. Aerobús, taxis and the L9 metro station are all signposted from there, and the metro station is built into the terminal. At T2, the Aerobús and taxi ranks are outside arrivals, and the Aeroport train station is a short covered walk from T2B. If you land at T1 and want the train, a free green shuttle bus links the two terminals around the clock; allow 10–15 minutes for the transfer plus waiting time. Our guide to Barcelona airport terminals explains which airlines use T1 and T2.

One practical tip: withdraw cash or check that your bank card works for contactless payments before you leave the baggage hall. Every option in this guide accepts cards, but ticket machines occasionally reject foreign cards, and a backup saves you a queue.

Aerobús: the simplest public option

The Aerobús is a dedicated express coach from Barcelona airport to city centre. Line A1 serves T1 and line A2 serves T2. Both stop at Plaça d’Espanya, Gran Via–Urgell and Plaça Universitat before ending at Plaça de Catalunya, the central square where La Rambla, Passeig de Gràcia and the Gothic Quarter meet.

  • Price: €7.45 single or €12.85 return; the return half is valid for 90 days.
  • Frequency: every 5–10 minutes at peak times, less often late at night.
  • Journey time: about 35 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya, longer in rush-hour traffic.
  • Tickets: buy online, at the machines by the stop, or tap a contactless card when boarding.
  • Luggage: there is a luggage area on board, but at busy times you may stand next to your case.

The Aerobús is the best balance of speed, price and simplicity for most visitors. Its weak point is the last stretch: Plaça de Catalunya is a hub, not a hotel door. If you are staying in Barceloneta, Poblenou or upper Gràcia, you will still need a metro ride or a taxi, which adds both time and a second ticket.

R2 Nord train: the cheapest fast route from T2

Rodalies line R2 Nord runs from Aeroport station, next to Terminal 2, through Barcelona-Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot. Trains leave roughly every 30 minutes from about 05:40 to 23:40, and the ride to Passeig de Gràcia takes around 27 minutes with no change. That makes it the fastest public link from Barcelona airport to city centre hotels in the Eixample.

The airport is in fare zone 1, so you can use a single ticket bought at the station machines or one trip on a T-casual multi-trip card, which is also valid on the metro and city buses. Unlike the metro, the train does not charge an airport premium.

Two caveats. First, with trains every half hour, missing one can cost you 30 minutes. Second, Rodalies services in Catalonia have suffered repeated disruptions and works in recent years, so check the Rodalies service alerts on the day you travel. If you land at T1, the free shuttle bus to T2 makes this option slower than the Aerobús.

Metro L9 Sud: direct to the network, but slow

Metro line L9 Sud has stations inside both terminals and connects to the rest of the metro at Torrassa (L1), Collblanc (L5) and Zona Universitària (L3). From Barcelona airport to city centre stations such as Plaça de Catalunya, expect around 50 minutes including one change.

  • Ticket: the dedicated Bitllet Aeroport costs €5.90 one way. Standard T-casual cards are not valid at the airport stations; the Hola Barcelona travel card is.
  • Hours: from 05:00 until midnight Sunday to Thursday, until 02:00 on Fridays, and all night on Saturdays.
  • Best for: hotels close to an L1, L3 or L5 station, or travellers who already bought a Hola Barcelona card for their stay.

The metro is reliable and avoids road traffic, but transfers involve long corridors and some stairs. With two large suitcases it is the most tiring option on this list.

Bus 46 and night buses

City bus 46 links both terminals with Plaça d’Espanya for the standard single fare, and T-casual is valid. It stops frequently through L’Hospitalet, so the ride takes 35–45 minutes. It is a sensible choice if your hotel is near Plaça d’Espanya or the Fira, and you are travelling light.

After midnight, the NitBus night lines N17 and N18 run between the airport and Plaça de Catalunya roughly every 20–30 minutes. They are cheap but slow, and on weekend nights they can be crowded.

Taxi: door to door, metered

Official Barcelona taxis are black and yellow and wait at signposted ranks outside arrivals at both terminals. Fares are metered under the 2026 tariffs set by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB):

  • A €4.60 airport supplement is added to every trip that starts or ends at the airport.
  • Trips from the airport have a minimum fare of €21, supplements included.
  • A higher per-kilometre rate applies on weeknights, weekends and public holidays.
  • A fixed €46 fare applies between the airport and the cruise terminals at Moll Adossat.

In practice, most taxi rides from Barcelona airport to city centre districts cost €35–45, depending on the time of day and traffic. A standard taxi takes up to four passengers; larger vehicles exist but are not guaranteed at the rank. Only take a taxi from the official rank, and ignore anyone offering a ride inside the arrivals hall. Card payment is accepted in all official taxis.

Pre-booked private driver

A pre-booked driver works differently from a taxi: the price is agreed in advance per vehicle, not per kilometre, and the driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, even if you are delayed. Child seats and larger vans can be arranged in advance, which a taxi rank cannot promise.

This makes most sense for families, groups of four or more (where the cost per person often falls below the Aerobús plus a taxi from Plaça de Catalunya), late-night arrivals and anyone who simply wants the first hour from Barcelona airport to city centre to be calm. If that sounds like you, see our Barcelona airport transfer page; prices start from €55 per car and €75 per van, with nothing to pay in advance.

Which route from Barcelona airport to city centre fits your trip?

  • Solo traveller, light bag, staying near Plaça de Catalunya: Aerobús.
  • Landing at T2, hotel in the Eixample: R2 Nord to Passeig de Gràcia.
  • You bought a Hola Barcelona card: Metro L9 Sud is already covered.
  • Couple with two large cases, hotel in Barceloneta: taxi, or a pre-booked car.
  • Family of four with a toddler: a private car with a child seat booked ahead.
  • Group of five to seven: a pre-booked van; one vehicle is simpler than two taxis.
  • Flying in and boarding a cruise the same day: taxi on the fixed cruise fare, or a Barcelona cruise port transfer booked in advance.
  • Landing after midnight: Aerobús or a taxi; the train and metro may have stopped.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Using a T-casual card on the metro from the airport. The gates will reject it; you need the airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card.
  2. Getting off the Aerobús too early. Unless your hotel is near Plaça d’Espanya or Universitat, stay on to Plaça de Catalunya.
  3. Accepting rides from unofficial drivers. Licensed taxis use the rank; pre-booked drivers will have your name.
  4. Ignoring pickpockets. The Aerobús, L9 and central stations are known hotspots; keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
  5. Assuming the train is running. Check Rodalies alerts before you rely on R2 Nord.

Going back: city centre to the airport

The same options work in reverse. The Aerobús leaves from Plaça de Catalunya (on the corner by El Corte Inglés) and stops at Sepúlveda–Urgell and Plaça d’Espanya on the way out. Check your terminal before you set off: the A1 goes to T1 and the A2 goes to T2, and getting on the wrong one costs you the shuttle transfer at the other end. Allow at least an hour for the journey plus security, more in summer when queues at T1 security can be long. A taxi or a pre-booked car is usually the least stressful choice for early-morning flights, when public transport runs less often.
